Skills - other uses

You may also use non-standard skills to get something done, as long as you can justify using your trained skills/tools to do something “out of the box”. It must be justifiable – no random “grasping for straws” (e.g.: “I’m trained in nature so can I use my knowledge of animal mating patterns to do an insight check to see if the prostitute is trying to seduce my ally?” or “I’m trained in Arcana, can I use this skill to make an arcana check to climb this cliff because I have studied books so I have sharp eyes?” etcetera

  • Example 1: You wish to “SKILL: Intimidate” someone, but you are not trained in it. You tell me you wish to do this with sleight of hand, whipping out a dagger from thin air and flinging it into the wall right next to their head. I would say “yes that works in the story and circumstance, make a sleight of hand check”. If you succeed, it is as if you succeeded with a trained intimidate check.
  • Example 2: You are faced with an Acrobatics check to cross a rickety log over a chasm. Instead you wish to use the climbing kit you are trained in, to put the crampons on your feet and cross, I would allow a dex check with proficiency bonus. Alternately you could try to justify a stealth check because you are ‘light footed’, perhaps a nature check because you can clearly see where the weak points in the wood are, or whatever you think would really justify the use of your skill or tool.
